I
slowly wake as the sun begins peeking
over the horizon and I'm taken by the
quiet of the morning. My wife Jules is sleeping
soundly, comforted by the lack of dogs wanting
breakfast, our daughter Stephanie asking for a
ride somewhere, or the need to be anywhere
in particular.
The din of sounds that typically blend to-
gether as a day goes on, makes it difficult to
distinguish one sound from another, but this
morning is remarkable, as I am on the water in
Mildred Tract on the California Delta and it is
dead quiet.
The sweet silence is softly broken by the lap-
ping of water against the hull of our boat.The
rising sun dances on the water as it heats the
valley and draws the cool ocean breeze past us
toward Sacramento and other parts east. After
a few minutes, I can hear the tones of a fish-
