Mark Broder creates one-of-a-kind pieces
of ne jewelry for a living, and loves everything
about his job.
“I get to be creative every day and when
my clients leave my shop, they leave happy!”
said Mark, who has been in the jewelry busi-
ness since 1983, and running his own store for
the last 11 years.
A second generation jeweler, Mark re-
members working with his dad when he was
16-years-old. Growing up and going to school
in Concord, Mark later trained in San Fran-
cisco to hone his skills. Walking through the
creative process with his clients is his favorite
part of the business.
“The creative process is what I love to do.
To sit down and get something on paper – I do
a design right in front of my clients. It’s very
rare that I have to sketch more than one design,
because I really listen to what they’re saying,”
said Mark.
While most jewelry designers use the com-
puter,Mark does everything by hand.“Ninety-
nine percent of all jewelry you see in the malls
is designed on a computer,” said Mark.“It really
limits your imagination and creativity to the
software designer’s ideas.”
Typically one thinks custom goes hand-
in-hand with high prices, but Mark says that’s
a myth. “To have something custom made
doesn’t mean it will cost more,” he said.“What
you get is a piece made personally for you at
very competitive pricing.”
“I’m not a salesman,” he added.“I will edu-
cate you about diamonds, the creative process,
etc.Then I will design a piece that works with-
in your budget, whatever that may be.”
You can also trade in your old gold and plat-
inum jewelry towards a new, custom design or
receive cash. “Jewelry is made to be worn, not
sit in a drawer!,” he added.
In addition to custom designing, Mark also
specializes in repairs, antique restoration, re-
modeling and hand engraving. Mark donates
to local fundraising events every year.
“Most everything I do is one-of-a-kind,”
said Mark. “You can go through my portfolio,
explore the possibilities, and really be part of
the designing process!”
