Our Printing Legacy From Benjamin Franklin
FolgerGraphics traces its earliest roots back to August 15, 1667 when Abiah Folger was born to Peter and Mary Folger. The Folger family was part of the Nantucket Island whaling community that flourished off the Massachusetts coast. In 1690 Abiah married Josiah Franklin and their son stepped boldly into the hallowed pages of American history. He was Benjamin Franklin, founding father, statesman, scientist and especially printer and publisher.
The printing blood that flowed through Benjamin Franklin's veins still flows today in the Folger family. After more than half a century the urge to print and publish still runs strong at FolgerGraphics. Founder Dick Folger's first "newspaper" was a hand-printed sheet that was secretly passed around in his sixth-grade classroom. The lead story, "Mrs. Nassahn Flushed Down the Toilet" (complete with a cartoon) got the young publisher some detention time, but launched a lifetime publishing career that continues (more discreetly) today.
While studying journalism at UC San Jose, Dick Folger founded the Valley View newspaper. He later started the Union City Leader and other newspapers serving the East Bay. Today FolgerGraphics prints for other publishers with three newspaper press lines. The Hayward company prints nearly 100 newspapers, among them The Catholic Voice.
In the last decade the advent of the internet became a giant chain saw that toppled formerly strong and well-equipped printing companies. Newspaper publishers lost half of their advertising revenue to the new internet kid on the block. But, through all the chaos, FolgerGraphics still stood while many fell.
The new world of printing demands full color and stunning quality. FolgerGraphics invested in state of the art Heidelberg Presses for longer print runs and high resolution digital color presses that produce breathtaking color. Seamless marketing capability is offered with modern bindery and mailing expertise. FolgerGraphics' money-saving mailing equipment can sort, de-dupe, ink-jet addresses, tab and bundle printed pieces at speeds of 15,000 per hour. Our waiting trucks whisk your mailings direct to the appropriate post offices.
