I
honestly never thought I’d be a
hair stylist. Growing up, I spent a
lot of my extra time hanging out at the
salon where my mom worked. She too,
is a hair stylist.Talking all day, working
with women, and having others tell you
about their life didn’t seem like a fun
job.
After a couple years of trying to earn
a degree in baking and pastry, I realized
that when I wanted to have a family,
and if I ever needed time o , it would
probably be di cult to do so, especially
if I wanted to own my own bakery. So
I made a di cult career switch: pastry
chef turned hair stylist.
Beauty school was extremely dif-
cult for me. I was working two jobs
while attending beauty school classes
at night. I felt exhausted, and most of
all, frustrated. A few instructors at the
beauty school only seemed to be there
to get paid. When I’d ask them for help
or asked to be educated more on color,
they’d look at me like I was an idiot,
and wouldn’t help or answer my ques-
tions at all.
About mid-way through my 1600
hours, I realized that I wanted to be an
instructor. I felt like it was something
I absolutely had to do. It was my obli-
gation to help students who were frus-
trated like me. After I got licensed in
2009, I went to Paris Beauty College
and completed the 600-hour Instruc-
tor Training Course. Shortly after, I was
working as an instructor at Paris.
Teaching was a great experience for
me. It was fascinating to be able to teach
to so many diverse people, from all
walks of life, and ranging in ages from
16 to 50 and older. Eventually, though, I
felt it was time to move on from work-
ing as an instructor. I felt that being an
educator allowed me to become far
more con dent as a cosmetologist. So
I left the beauty school and found an
amazing salon where I currently work
called Holy Hair Salon. As a hair styl-
ist at Holy Hair, I specialize in hair-
cuts, color and permanent waves.
Another passion I’ve always had
is writing. One of my goals is to be
a beauty writer and write for maga-
zines. I can remember as a young
girl, I’d always have a note-
book and pen, and was always
writing and drawing.
I’ve looked up to
many people in the
hair salon industry.
My mom, of course,
who has always sup-
ported and helped
me, is who I look up
to the most. I admire
the amazing ladies at
Holy Hair, who have
also been very supportive.
Without my mom and these wonder-
ful ladies, I honestly don’t think I’d be
where I am today.
